Residential and small business natural gas customers can easily and effectively balance carbon emissions from heating, water heaters, appliances and more for a small monthly charge.

When you join the Natural Gas Balance community, you help:

Balance all or some of your carbon footprint from natural gas usage, and you can change your participation level at any time.

Protect more than 25,000 acres of mature Michigan forests. Sustained, healthy forests act as natural “scrubbers” that absorb and balance carbon dioxide (CO2) produced from burning natural gas through our everyday usage.

Expand development and use of renewable natural gas (RNG). Methane emitted from landfills and wastewater treatment plants is trapped and impurities are removed, creating a cleaner source of natural gas for our homes and businesses.

How Natural Gas Balance Works

Participation in Natural Gas Balance is voluntary. If you are a DTE residential or small business natural gas customer and your account is in good standing, you are eligible to enroll in the program. You can enter or leave at any time and you may change your level of participation once per month.

During enrollment, you select one of four participation levels. The levels represent addressing all or some percentage of natural gas usage in an average Michigan household.

Throughout the year, we phone customers or visit door-to-door to encourage support for clean energy options. We never ask for payments or financial identification, like credit or debit information. If you decide to join a program, we'll ask you to confirm your identification to match your DTE account.

Measuring Progress

Natural Gas Balance is approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). Our annual report highlights the number of Natural Gas Balance participants, our program supply details and the total emissions offset through participation.

We use American Carbon Registry (ACR) methodology and protocol to quantify and report greenhouse gas emission benefits that result from our forestry projects. All offsets are registered with ACR.

Potential Impact of Natural Gas Balance

Once the program reaches our ten-year enrollment goal, participants will be protecting approximately 25,000 acres of Michigan forests and will have mitigated greenhouse gas emissions by one million metric tons of CO2-e.

Environmental Impact and Participation Levels

Natural gas usage emissions are expressed as carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent, or CO2-e. That means the number of metric tons of CO2 emissions with the same global warming potential as one metric ton of any other greenhouse gas. The average natural gas usage emission of a DTE residential customer household is 5.2 metric tons/CO2-e annually.

The chart below shows the environmental impact in amount of CO2-e offset for each level of participation in the program. For comparison purposes, the offset is illustrated by the equivalent of removing a car from the road for one year.

The Natural Gas Balance Story

Natural Gas Balance evolved from our BioGreenGas (BGG) program that was ahead of its time when it launched in 2012 and gave our customers an opportunity to participate in RNG advancements.

We conducted a survey of BGG participants and expanded it to all eligible customers about voluntary programs for a more sustainable future. Survey respondents chose among real life options on pricing and supply mix.

Through analysis of survey results, we were able to understand what was truly important: our customers wanted a program in which they could affordably address up to 100% of their natural gas usage and include RNG in the supply. We used that feedback to develop Natural Gas Balance, which combines carbon offsets and RNG.

More about Carbon Offsets and Renewable Natural Gas

Am I addressing my home’s exact natural gas usage?

No. The amount of emissions balance is based on natural gas usage of an average Michigan home. The average DTE residential customer’s annual gas usage is 95Mcf.*

* Quantities of natural gas are usually measured in cubic feet (cf). The M in Mcf is the Roman numeral for 1,000.

How does the program balance carbon offsets and RNG?

Based on survey results from our customers (described above in The Natural Gas Balance Story), we created a participation program that is impactful, affordable and includes carbon offsets and RNG. The program supports a cleaner Michigan with roughly 97% achieved through carbon offset and about 3% achieved with RNG.

The majority of RNG produced today is sold into the transportation sector, and producers can take advantage of financial incentives specific to that sector. The 3% level allows us to acquire impactful amounts of RNG and completely pay the extra cost and full environmental attributes of RNG while keeping Natural Gas Balance affordable.

Natural Gas Balance sources all forest carbon offsets from projects here in Michigan.

How are my participation costs distributed?

Your participation fees are used to cover the costs of offsets that help protect and preserve Michigan forests; to procure RNG, which helps to significantly balance the greenhouse gas impact of methane; and to help support program administration.

Would going all-electric be more environmentally friendly?

A shift to 100% electrification would present a tremendous challenge to our customers. In a colder climate like Michigan’s, natural gas is the most effective and efficient energy source for home heating and will remain so for the foreseeable future because of its low cost, abundance and reliability.

Our number one goal continues to be to deliver safe, clean and affordable energy to our customers while protecting the environment through a diverse mix of energy options.
